SUMMARY:Strategies for Environmentally Friendly Lawn Substitutes
DESCRIPTION:Maintaining a lawn can be labor intensive and environmentally challenging—but what are the alternatives? Piedmont Master Gardener Janette Martin will present options for reducing your lawn and making it more environmentally friendly\, such as replacing some lawn with clover\, ground covers\, and wildlife-friendly native plant beds. She will also suggest solutions for problem spots like shade and slopes and will provide an overview of today’s best management practices for a sustainable lawn. \nJanette Martin has lived in the Charlottesville area for more than 26 years and has worked as a journalist and teacher\, most recently at the University of Virginia. As a Piedmont Master Gardener volunteer\, she has taken part in the Healthy Virginia Lawns program\, among other projects. \nRegister here to attend this program.

SUMMARY:Rain Barrel Workshop at Starr Hill Downtown
DESCRIPTION:Every time it rains\, stormwater carries nutrients from fertilizers\, bacteria from pet waste\, and chemicals from herbicides and pesticides from our homes to local waterways. Using a rain barrel at home is a way to reduce stormwater pollution and conserve water. A single rain barrel can collect hundreds\, even thousands of gallons of rainwater annually. Join the James River Association\, the Piedmont Master Gardeners\, and other members of the Rivanna Stormwater Education Partnership for a rain barrel workshop at Starr Hill Downtown at the Dairy Market in Charlottesville on Thursday\, September 4\, at 6 p.m. Participants will learn how to assemble and install rain barrels at home. For the $50 registration fee\, you will receive a 55-gallon drum\, a RainRecycle Rain Barrel Kit from The Rain Barrel Depot\, and a beverage. Register here to take part.

SUMMARY:What Makes a Species Invasive?
DESCRIPTION:Invasive species like tree-of-heaven\, Japanese stiltgrass\, autumn olive\, and oriental bittersweet create serious problems in ecosystems. Plant invaders contribute to the decline of native flora and fauna; decrease soil\, water\, and air quality; and have detrimental economic impacts and adverse effects on human health. Soil scientist and Master Gardener Linda Blum will describe why some plants become invasive and the factors that contribute to their spread. Registration for this free program will be available here beginning September 16.

SUMMARY:Turn Your Garbage to Gold: Outdoor Composting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:At the compost demonstration site in the Bread & Roses Gardens at Trinity Episcopal Church\, Piedmont Master Gardeners and members of the Bread & Roses Gardens team will present “Turn Your Garbage to Gold\,” a free outdoor composting workshop. According to EPA\, in a year the U.S. sends more than 292 million tons of solid waste to municipal landfills. Over 50 percent of this waste is compostable\, with food scraps alone accounting for over 21 percent. When added to a landfill\, food scraps decompose anaerobically (without oxygen) and release methane–a potent greenhouse gas–into the atmosphere. But when composted\, food scraps contribute to healthy soil\, healthy plants\, healthy air\, and healthy water. Learn how to turn compostable waste–including fallen leaves\, a gift from Mother Nature–into the preferred food for your garden. \nRegister below to take part. Registration closes at 5 p.m. November 8 or when the class is full.

SUMMARY:Turn Your Garbage to Gold: Our Next Outdoor Workshop on Composting
DESCRIPTION:The next in our series of free outdoor workshops on composting will be held at the compost demonstration site in the Bread & Roses Gardens at Trinity Episcopal Church. We will showcase a range of techniques for turning household waste such as food scraps\, yard trimmings\, uncoated paper\, cardboard\, and sawdust into the ideal soil amendment for the yard and garden. We will also show how all households\, large and small\, can keep compostable waste out of landfills. When added to a landfill\, food scraps decompose anaerobically (without oxygen) and release methane\, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global climate change. When composted\, food scraps contribute to healthy soil and plants and to cleaner water and air. \nRegister below to reserve your place in the class. Registration closes at 5 p.m. March 6 or when the class is full.

SUMMARY:No-Till Gardening: An Easier Way to Grow
DESCRIPTION:No-till gardening (also known as no-dig gardening) is built on four key principles: \n\nsoil armor (keeping soil covered)\,\nminimizing disturbance\,\nplant diversity\, and\nmaintaining living roots.\n\nBy prioritizing soil biology over mechanical turning\, this efficient approach reduces labor\, decreases the need for weeding and watering\, builds long-term fertility\, and creates a more resilient garden ecosystem\, capturing carbon in the soil rather than releasing it as CO2. Join Master Gardener Fern Campbell as she describes the principles and benefits of no-till gardening and how you can apply them to your own garden and landscapes. \nThis event is free and open to all. Registration will open soon.
