Weeds in the Garden: PMG Speakers Bureau at The Center at Belvedere
–The plants we DO NOT want are among a gardener’s biggest challenges. Piedmont Master Gardeners will help you win the “weed war” with advice and help on the following topics:
• Understanding weed biology and life cycle
• Identifying your weeds
• Practices and strategies for weed management
• Choosing tools to get the job done
• Preventing weeds.
–Ample time will be provided for Q&A about specific weed problems; audience members are encouraged to bring questions about their own challenges.

Winter Guided Tree Walk at the Ivy Creek Natural Area

–Learn about the area’s trees and how they reflect both cultural and natural history, as well as tips for identifying the most common species. Easy to moderate walk on established trails that are well maintained with some inclines and declines. Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Tree Basics Class on Zoom: The Social Life of Trees
Thursday, February 19 @ 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Through millions of years of evolution, trees have coevolved with microbes, fungi, and each other to produce complex networks of relationships. This presentation will explore the different mechanisms that bind together communities of trees so that they can share water, acquire rare nutrients, and tap into a vast information-sharing network.

Join us for Garden Guardians Wednesday, February 28th to help us keep the site a wonderful place for its visitors. This group of intrepid volunteers performs vital maintenance work such as weeding existing beds, identifying and managing invasive plants, maintaining paths, and more.

Conservation Projects at Highland
Saturday, February 21 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 amJames Monroe Highland and the on-campus Institute for Integrative Conservation have collaborated on a series of projects focused on Highland’s landscape and the forces that have shaped it. Leaders and students from Highland and the IIC will share perspectives and results of these collaborative projects.
The talk will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the lower level of the Highland Event Barn, with an optional hike from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (weather permitting). In the event of inclement weather, this program will move to a virtual setting via Zoom.
