Cultivating Community: PMG's Volunteer Projects

In 2009, PMG’s 128 members together volunteered 7,181 hours to community and organization projects.  Calculated at the hourly equivalent for volunteer work, the total labor contributed by PMG members last year added up to $145,000.

The true value of our volunteer efforts, of course, has more to do with community pride and commitment than with dollar signs. We love channeling our passion for gardening into opportunities to give back to the communities we call home. Some of our favorite activities focus on sharing our gardening knowledge with friends and neighbors. Last year alone our volunteers logged 1,708 hours at our Horticulture Help Desk, City Market (Charlottesville), Meade Park Market (Charlottesville) and Crozet farmers' market, offering advice and researching garden-related questions. Tree Steward projects garnered
1,332 hours. Members made time to contribute 529 hours of mentoring to our newest classes of Master Gardeners. To boot, we continued planting and maintaining our first-ever demonstration garden, "The Rock," at the old Ix Building site near Charlottesville's downtown mall. Volunteers also contributed 529 hours to our annual Spring Plant Sale.

Come back and visit this section often for regular updates on our volunteer activities. We hope you'll be inspired to join us or find volunteer opportunities of your own!

"The man who has planted a garden feels that he has done something for the good of the whole world."
-Charles Dudley Warner-
