"The Rock": Directions to PMG's Demo Garden

The PMG demonstration garden effort began in 2005 and became a reality with the creation of a Monticello Associates partnership late in the year. By 2006, PMG had an agreement with Monticello Associates to develop a garden on their property on patch of ground known as the "The Rock." Ground preparation and the first phase of planting began in the fall of 2006.

"The Rock" includes approximately 6,000 square feet of shade and sun nestled between the renovated Monticello Associates building on the old Ix property and the parking lot. It is within walking distance of the pedestrian mall in downtown Charlottesville. The space is dominated by a large rock (hence the name!) under mature trees. The garden will highlight native plants, most of which have been donated by PMG members and local businesses.

Directions: One approach to the garden is from 5th Street. Coming from the VCE office, going northeast on 5th St towards downtown Charlottesville, turn right on Elliott Avenue. Continue on Elliott for a couple of blocks and turn left on 2nd Street toward a complex of business offices on the left. NOTE: This 2nd Street does not connect with the 2nd Street east of the downtown mall. It empties into the parking lot of Monticello Associates. "The Rock" is next to the parking lot.

Alternate Directions: Another approach is to drive south on 5th Street (also known as Ridge Street from Main Street in downtown Charlottesville) and turn left onto Monticello Avenue. Continue to 6th Street and turn right. Go a few blocks on 6th Street to the entrance of the business complex on the right. This entrance is opposite Blenheim Avenue on the left. Turn right from 6th Street and the parking lot is immediately on the left. "The Rock" is located between the parking lot and the building. NOTE: If coming from the north and/or the east of downtown Charlottesville, Monticello Avenue may be accessed from Avon Street.
